10 Button Craft Projects
Here is a whole list of button projects that are as cute as, well, a button! Try them next time you have a craving for a fun project. What can you do with some mismatched buttons?
1. Button Artwork
Kids can really use their imaginations with this one. Use craft buttons as the main art supply in a drawing today. Make the first thing that comes to your mind, only make it entirely (or nearly) out of buttons. See how creative children get when they are trying to make puppy dogs, flowers, rainbows, houses and more all from buttons of different shapes and colors.
2. Button Bracelet
Button bracelets are fun to make and great for some hand eye coordination practice. String buttons of different colors, shapes and sizes onto a beading thread. To close, either knot the ends together, or tie a button to either end and then twist the two end buttons for an adjustable button bracelet.
3. Button Hairclips
Use a hot glue gun to attach buttons to hairclips for easy accessorizing. So simple and yet so sweet.
4. Button Wreath
For an anytime treat, let your kids make fun button wreaths with colorful and interesting shaped buttons. Glue buttons to a stiff backing (like a donut-shaped piece of cardboard).
5. Creative Clock
Make a creative clock using buttons. Cut a circle from heavy-duty card stock paper, cork or styrofoam. Create a hole in the center for hands. Next, place a button around the circle where each number would go on a clock face. You can make a pattern or place different shapes and colors at random. Use pipe cleaners as hand and secure with a paper fastener. Teach children about time and how clocks work with this adorable button clock model. You can also purchase an inexpensive battery-powered clock mechanism and the clock will tell real time.
6. Dress it Up Buttons can be a cool way to dress up clothing, shoes, and many accessories. Use your buttons with thread to dress up clothing and with a glue gun to dress up shoes and handbags. Add buttons to a pair of sandals or a sunhat for even more fun in the sun.
7. Decor
Novelty Buttons can also be used to decorate items around the house. Picture frames, shoeboxes, and even notebook covers look even better when you add colorful buttons. Kids will have a ball gluing buttons on items then decorating the house. Buttons also make great mosaic crafts which can be applied to many different surfaces.
8. Button Flowers Make an adorable floral display using buttons, pipe cleaners and craft foam. Use the pipe cleaners as stems and form leaves with green craft foam. Attach one end of the pipe cleaners through the holes in your buttons to create the flower head and you have a set of lovely flowers. Add several buttons to one stem for complex or multicolored flowers. Glue to a piece of poster board, display in a vase or "plant" the stems into a piece of Styrofoam painted green.
9. Button Magnets
Buttons make useful refrigerator magnets. Simply glue your magnet to the back of a button and voila, instant magnet. Or pair your button with ABC beads and craft sticks to make personalized magnets. Make a whole set for your fridge or to give as gifts. Hygloss makes self-adhesive magnetic strips for easy magnet making.
10. Personalized Napkins
You can add a bit of flair to ordinary linens, tablecloths or cloth napkins by embellishing with buttons. For example, place three or four buttons in one corner of a napkin in a triangle or square shape, and you've easily created a totally unique set of table linens. This is a great way to spruce of an old or boring set and is also a wonderful present for a newly wed couple. Older kids can practice their sewing on this simple project and younger kids will enjoy sorting and matching the different buttons into shapes and colors. This idea can also be used to make personalized gift tags for presents.
