There are 38,000 known species of frogs and new species are continually being recognized (mainly in rainforests). More than 30 species are listed as threatened.
Their bulging eyes enable them to see in all direction sand like most amphibians they spend part of their life in the water and part on land. The majority of frogs lay their eggs in the water where, after they have been fertilized by the male, they hatch within 3-25 days. Some species even lay several thousand eggs, many of which are eaten by fish, ducks, or insects.
As the eggs hatch into tadpoles (or polliwogs) many are eaten by larger water animals so that only a few eggs develop into frogs. Some tropical frogs lay their eggs on land have have no tadpole stage.
