Instructions

  1. For the bark of the tree, cut a piece of brown velour (or any brown paper) 4"x7". Wrap it around the roll and tape/staple/glue it at the seam.
  2. Take a light green and dark green paper. Hold them together and cut lengthwise. Line up the four stips (2 light green and 2 dark green) horizontally. Now cut slits into the paper, about an inch apart from each other, leaving about 1 1/2 inches at the bottom uncut. (See image)

  3. Now take one light green and one dark green paper which you just cut and form a circle that will fit into the toilet paper roll. Place the uncut side into the roll with the slit part of the paper facing up. Once it's inside of the roll, make sure it fits exactly in, maneuvering it with your hands.
  4. Staple it into the roll by the seam. Make another staple on the other side of the roll to hold it firmly in place. Then bend the slitted part of the papers outward/downward, forming your leaves.
  5. Repeat step 3 with the remaining light and green papers. Place them inside of the first layer of "leaves," staple in, and bend downward. Tip: For a fuller look, don't line up exactly with the first layer.
  6. For the cherries, take red foam sheet and cut 1/2 inch circles and glue on randomly (as shown in picture above.
Now you have a wonderful Presidents' Day craft.

*Tips for teachers:
This is a great lesson plan for Presidents' Day. Have a group discussion about honesty and integrity. Have each student create his/her own adorable cherry tree to take home. You can keep one tree in the classroom to remind your students when necessary about the greatness of honesty.
