This striking flower with its dramatic sword-like leaves was named after the golden-winged goddess of the rainbow, who was a messenger of the gods. In Greek mythology, Iris traveled on the path of the rainbow carrying the commands of the gods.

Iris married Zephyrus, the west wind. The colors of irises range through all the beautiful shades of the rainbow. They have three upright petals and three drooping sepals, which often sport a fuzzy beard.
