The Traffic Light Kit has many original uses for parents and teachers alike. Use this kit to teach shapes to children by pointing out how circles are commonly seen in daily life. Traffic circles are also the perfect way to teach the colors red, yellow and green. When teaching road safety to children, traffic lights are an ideal medium for teaching the basic rules of stop and go, as well as safely crossing the street. The Traffic Light Kit has another unique use and that is as a classroom behavior management tool. When teaching a preschool or elementary school class, traffic lights are a simple, yet very clear way to make the rules of the classroom, and right and wrong, known to the child. Try the following exercise with your class in order to help with behavior management. Make a car with each child's name on it. When the child's name is in the green zone (lined up with the green light), he knows he can “go”, following rules and making good choices. If the child has not made such a good choice, he must move his car to the yellow zone, as a warning that he needs to proceed with caution. Move his car into the red zone if he has made a poor choice and needs to stop and think before going further. Once he's made another poor choice, his car gets moved ""off the road"" and he loses his end-of-the-day reward (a sticker or other treat). However, it's always a good teaching tool to allow the child the opportunity to earn their way “back onto the road”. If they choose good behavior twice in a row, they can move their car back into the green light zone and get another chance.
