Turtles have successfully adapted themselves to every environment - aquatic, oceanic and terrestrial - throughout the tropical and temperate zones.

They are found in dry landscapes - plains, savannas and deserts as well as grasslands, woodlands and mountains. Diverse species occur in fresh water and true sea turtles live in the sea, but lay their eggs on land. Large land-dwelling turtles are often called tortoises, while those that are hard-shelled, edible and aquatic are called terrapins.
