Getting to Know You Bulletin Board

"Getting to Know You" Bulletin Board

I love this back to school bulletin board idea, since it's created mostly by the kids, yet still looks inviting on the first day of school. Best of all, it creates that feeling of connection and "getting to know you" that both teachers and students crave as they head back to school each year.

*See below for additional back-to-school activities that you can do with this bulletin board idea.

Instructions

  1. Attach 2 or 3 large Mighty Bright papers (butterscotch color) with tape. Cut off one corner (as shown in photo) to form the shape of a school bus.
  2. Cut out two circles from black paper and attach to the bottom of the bus as wheels.
  3. Attach blue Mighty Bright papers (8.5 x 11) for windows. One face will fit in each window, so try to fit as many as you'll need. You can place 2 rows, "double decker," in order to get more in. You can also trim them a bit. For large classes, if the necessary amount of students won't fit in the bus, place the remainder of faces all around the bus.
  4. Use any color Might Bright paper to write a welcoming message on top of the bus. You may chose to focus on your theme, and write something like this: "IN FIRST GRADE WE ARE EACH SPECIAL IN OUR OWN WAY" or "MEET THE SUPER STUDENTS OF CLASS 5-A". Or stick to something neutral- "WELCOME TO MISS SMITH'S FIRST GRADE".
  5. During the first week of school, have children decorate a Face Cut-out to look like them. They can choose from 5 shades of skin and 4 colors of curly hair, to form a combination most similar to their own.  Either have them color eyes with markers, or use Wiggle Eyes. Encourage children to add details (such as birthmarks, dimples, eyebrows etc.) to make the face resemble them more.
  6. Place faces in windows to complete your eye-catching, original bulletin board for back to school.

*Back to school Activities to do in conjunction with this Bulletin Board:
  • Provide students with 5" colorful squares on which to write something about themselves. You may wish to give them guidance in the form of questions to answer, or general tips of what to write. For example, have children write about all their favorites: color, pet, subject... Or just have them write anything that makes them special.
  • Once children have finished writing about themselves, read one square at a time out loud to the class without reading the name, and have the rest of the class guess whose it is. Then allow that child to tack his/her square alongside his/her face on the bulletin board.
  • This back to school activity is an effective way for teachers to get to know more about their students. It also boosts the students' self esteem by giving them individualized attention, and respecting them for who they are as a unique person.
  • Children will be able to look at this back to school bulletin board over the course of the first month of school (or however long it remains on the wall,) and will learn more about each other by reading their friends' "essays".
