Tips For Teachers:

  • This Hungry Caterpillar activity can (and should!) be adapted to meet different students' age and literacy levels. The following are some ideas you can choose to focus on: writing numbers; writing foods; writing various other sight words; practicing handwriting.
  • In our sample (for grades 1-2), we chose to focus on teaching children to write the days of the week, in addition to other simple words known as "sight words." Although memorizing the spelling of sight words might be beyond the children's capabilities, seeing and writing these words makes them familiar so they will be easily identifiable in other contexts.
  • Of course, for children who are capable of writing more, yo ca have them write entire sentences.
  • Either allow children to draw free illustrations on every page, or use the materials suggested above to enhance the book and encourage creativity. See photos below.
  1. The cover: Form a Caterpillar from several 2" circles (eiter Pocket Shapes or Stick-A-Licks). Draw legs, antennae, and a smile. Add Wiggle Eyes to the face.
  2. The egg: Cut an egg shape from a 2" circle. Glue or stick it onto a Leaf Shape.
  3. The caterpillar: Use 2" circle Pocket Shapes or 2" circle Stick-A-Licks. Stick 3 circles next to each other for a small caterpillar, and 6 circles for a big one. Draw legs, antennae, and a face using crayons, markers or pens. You may use Wiggle Eyes for the eyes. (We used them on the front cover only.)
  4. The food:  Have children draw each individual food on a 2" circle. This will encourage counting skills, as well as enable the children to keep track of how many of each food they have made. [Note: if using the circle Stick-A-Licks, a pen or permanent marker will work best. For circle Pocket Shapes, all crayons or markers will do.]
  5. The cocoon:  Draw a long, thin oval across 2 pages of the book. Have children spread glue on it. Then have them stick on pieces of Tissue Paper (brown, yellow, or white, or all 3).
  6. Decorating the butterfly- 2 options: A) Provide each child with one Bright Shape Butterfly and decorate with small Stick-A-Lick shapes. Teach children how to create a symmetrical design on the wings. B) Use Dippity Dye Butterflies; have children draw a symmetrical design with washable markers, and then spray with a water spray bottle. The colors will bleed into each other, creating a beautiful effect.
  7. Don't forget to have the "authors" write their names on the front cover and place a photo of themselves on the back cover!
