Practicing to count has never been more hands-on and fun than with this innovative Very Hungry Caterpillar activity. Kids will enjoy forming fruits out of modeling dough, and they'll get a kick out of watching their "caterpillar straws" nibble real holes through their creations! Great for cognitive and fine motordevelopment, this Hungry Caterpillar game is unmatched!

Instructions

  1. Adult should draw fruits with marker (as shown in picture) onto collage tray. The amounts and types of fruits from the book are as follows: 1 apple, 2 pears, 3 plumbs, 4 strawberries, 5 oranges.
  2. Write numbers in the fruit. For example, write a 1 in the apple, and write numbers 1 through 3 in the 3 plumbs. Allow older children to write the numbers by themselves.
  3. Provide children with appropriate colors of Dazzlin' Dough. Have them press a small piece onto each drawn shape on their collage board, forming the shape of that fruit out of dough.
  4. Now give each child a clear straw and pretend that it's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. As you read the story to the class, have the children poke holes through the correct fruits as you go along. The straw will automatically pick up a piece of Dough, leaving a real hole in the fruit! Have them count aloud as their caterpillar "eats," to reinforce counting skills.
  5. When the activity is finished, children can either peel off fruits and store Dazzlin' Dough for a different time, or allow children to bring home their whole Collage Tray in a 2 gallon zip-seal bag, which will keep Dough soft and pliable for later usage.
