Looking for a fun and educational craft for kids this Presidents' Day? Here is a fantastic Presidents' Day activity for your classroom. Divide your class into groups, or do as a class project, and watch your students create a magnificent tree to represent all the presidents of the United States.
  1. For the tree, use our PATTERN of the President Tree or draw your own simple pattern for the students to trace onto brown craft foam. Have the students cut out the center of the tree and the four branches, as shown in picture.

  2. Glue the tree onto the large poster board.
  3. First make the apples. Draw a simple apple shape as shown in the picture, or use our PATTERN. Have the students trace onto red holograhic paper and cut out. Each group will need 23 apples.Set aside when done.

  4. The leaf pattern should be prepared before class. Make enough to distribute to each child in the class. Use our PATTERN or draw your own leaf shape as shown in picture below and trace onto any firm cardboard. Give each child a leaf pattern and assign an amount of leaves that he/she should trace onto green paper and cut out. Each group should end up with 44 leaves all together, to represent the 44 presidents. You can alternate light and dark green paper among the students. Working in groups is great training for team effort.

  5. When each group has all 44 leaves, they can begin to write the names of the president. Distribute a list of presidents to each group. (For older children it should include the years of their term as president.) For younger children you will probably have to assign which specific presidents each child should write. Make sure the leaves stay in order.

  6. Place the leaves on the tree in chronological order, as shown in the picture above.
  7. Glue the leaves in place by putting a small dot of glue on the tip of each leaf. Then peel off the adhesive from the apples and place onto tree as shown above. (Optional: You can skip the glue and "tape" on the leaves with the apples, two at a time, as shown.)

Now you have a spectacular Presidents' Day craft to hang up in the classroom or the hallway of your school. The students will take pride in this group project that they've completed together, while learning about their country's history.
