Watermelon Pouch

Preschool summer crafts are always fun, but when combined with watermelon, they become favorites instantly! This paper plate craft is perfect for parties, camp, or home. It can be worn as a necklace or around the waist, and provides the perfect place for little ones to keep party favors and treats.

Supplies Box

  1. Have adult draw 2 circles with a pencil, on the Paper Plate. One circle should be around an inch away from the edge of the plate (where the scalloped part ends), and the second one should be around 1/4 inch closer to the middle.
  2. Have children paint the center of the plate red or pink, and the outer rim green. They 1/4 inch strip between the red and green should remain white. Allow to dry.
  3. Optional: Have children use Alphabet Letter Sponges to paint the letters of their name on the green rim. (This will add a lot to the finished product, but make sure you have enough adult supervision and help available, as children won't be able to do it alone.)
  4. For the pits, there are 2 options: 1) Dip the back of the paint brush into black paint and dab on the red center, to create dark, real-looking pits.  2) If the day's menu or theme allows, serve real watermelon to the children, and have them save all their pits to glue onto the watermelon crafts!
  5. Cut plate in half. Holding the 2 halves together back to back (the white sides touching), punch holes about 3/4" apart, all along the green rim.
  6. Cut a  length of yarn, about 24". String one end into the first hole, tie a knot, and have children lace up their paper plate craft into a pouch. Knot the other end of the string.
  7. Attach a set of  Hook and Loop Coins to the inside of the watermelon pouch, as a closure.
  8. Use your choice of ribbon to turn your summer craft into necklaces or waist pouches. For a necklace, use a narrow piece of ribbon, about 18" long, and tie the 2 ends to the 2 corner holes of the plate. For a waist pouch, Use thicker ribbon. Cut 2 pieces, 12 inches each, and tie them to the 2 corner holes so that you can tie a bow in back of the child.

More Ideas Related To This Summer Craft For Kids:

For a birthday party: Create a watermelon theme. Set the table with green and pink paper goods and streamers. [Try putting out large green plates with small red/ pink plates in the center.] Serve watermelon to your little guests, and have them save up their pits to glue to the actual project. You can even use these as goody bags; prepare some treats in regular sandwich bags beforehand, and insert them into the watermelon craft before the kids leave the party!

Day camp or school activity: This is a great opportunity to reinforce counting skills. Encourage kids to guess how many pits their slice of watermelon will have, and then count them together with the children when they've finished eating.  After they've glued all their pits to their paper  plate craft, they can count them again and again!

At Home: This is a fun summer project to do with your little ones, and an awesome way to spend some bonding time together on those long summer afternoons.  It can actually be split up into 2 or 3 days, as you watch your children develop their fine motor skills, counting skills, lacing, and even teach them to spell their name!
